\u201cWe come to conquer our mess,\u201d I said in a recent voice note. Where? I guess in life. We came to go through our mess.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I kept telling people about this dream, compulsively. It can be annoying when someone tells you a dream. No one cares but the one who dreamed it. But I wanted to share it. Dreams feel urgent and so important and at the same time, dumb. We undermine what we don’t understand. I have no idea what it was about. I don’t recall any image or theme; the only thing I remember is an overflow of images and sound. Complete overload. Layers and layers of it, surrounding me, pressed into a uniform ball of thick visuals and noise. I opened my eyes, slammed into total silence and the clear, focused image of the white wall, my room viewed sideways from the bed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis image is drawn from a library of camera phone photos (\u2026) These broad image-types group disparate objects and phenomena by formal qualities such as shape, colour and orientation, recording subjects underfoot or overhead, above or below the body. This unlikely vertical axis, bypasses the social field. At different scales, the shapes of objects are reflected in one another: the membrane of an animal cell finds equivalence in the curvature of the earth.\u201d This is an extract from the exhibition text of The World is Round<\/i> at Piper Keys, 2018. I still find myself using that vertical axis, bypassing the social field. What is wrong with depicting people?<\/span><\/p>\n

Making this video meant digging back into the disordered archive of images I accumulate over the years, on hard drives, on devices, in online storage. The photographs are sentimental objects. They are a form of possession, a way of stealing straight from the real. After going through all those files, they felt important, even when an image didn\u2019t show much. They are a document of how I consume the world, a record of where my attention once went. A form of punctuation.<\/span><\/p>\n
